Project: Foothill Sewer Project

Client: Douglas County

Location: Genoa, Nevada

Description:
Site: This sewer system is located in the foothills of Douglas County, near Genoa.

Challenge: A prime location for residential development, the foothill area of Douglas County was unable to reach its full development potential without adequate sewer facilities. In addition to extreme sewer pipe pressure and long-distance piping, the project involved extensive permitting through the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers for crossing of wetlands, direct communication with private landowners to acquire easements for the sewer line and hydraulic modeling of the proposed system, which included three pumps in series. Initially hired by a private client, R.O. Anderson was engaged to develop a residential sewer system plan for this area. Once that plan was accepted, we were hired by Douglas County to design the system to link to the Douglas County public sewer system.

Solution: To accommodate unexpected growth, the foothill sewer’s most viable option was to link to the existing public system. Our comprehensive solution included seven and a half miles of force main, two miles of gravity main, two new lift stations and a lift station retrofit. We also conceived and designed a surge basin to equalize flows, which eliminated the need to upsize the existing system and thereby resulted in significant cost savings to the County.
