Project: Alpine County Street Lighting and Sidewalk Plan

Client: Alpine County

Location: Markleeville, California

Description:
R.O. Anderson was engaged by Alpine County to provide schematic designs to assist the County in developing funding for a future streetscape project for downtown Markleeville. This work entailed a field survey of physical features located along the Highway 89 and Hot Springs Road, such as buildings, curbs, signs, existing sidewalks, drainage and other important features. We met with the County Engineer and Planning Director to perform a physical inventory of the downtown area, including key visual focal points, potential crossing locations, and noted other observable important features to be considered during the design. We also met with representative of the downtown business owners association for an overview of the project and noted their key concerns and issues with the proposed future project. We then prepared schematic drawings in plan view, locating proposed new sidewalks, street lighting and street furniture for the downtown area. This plan was ultimately presented to the Planning Commission to be incorporated in future funding requests for work in the downtown area. Public funding shortfalls and right-of-way issues with the state transportation department along Highway 89 have prevented the project from moving forward.
