Project: City of Mesquite Sign Ordinance Update

Client: The City of Mesquite

Location: Mesquite, Nevada

Description:
The City of Mesquite is a rapidly growing, rural community located in southern Nevada. The City is located on Interstate 15 approximately 85 miles northeast of Las Vegas, Nevada and 35 miles southwest of St. George, Utah. In recent years, the economy has been focused on golfing, travel, tourism, recreation, home construction and retirement. Mesquite has five major casinos that employ over 4,000 people. It is Nevada’s gateway to Zion National Park and the Grand Canyon. In 2007, the City retained R.O. Anderson to prepare and update to their sign ordinance. The rapid growth in Mesquite created a need to evaluate and update its current sign regulation to: 1) reflect changes in federal and state laws; 2) legal decisions; and 3) community preferences. The sign regulation update involved a comprehensive look at Mesquite’s current sign code and compared it to federal and state law, as well as, Supreme Court decisions pertaining to the regulation of signs and speech. The update prepared resulted in draft regulations that are easily understood, user-friendly, and reflective of community standards and character. The final draft will be considered by the City Council for adoption into the Mesquite Municipal Code in October of 2008.
